This mixed-media painting is about saying a heart-felt "YES!" to the ongoing process of life -- through all the stages, surprises, gifts (both wanted and unwanted). Each of the gold symbols running across the painting represents a turning point or a period in the life journey. In addition to the hearts, I used the five symbols that anthropologist Angeles Arrien discovered to be universal across gender, age and culture. (She pursued this research after studying fairy tales and legends from different cultures.) I've written more on Angeles Arrien and the five symbols in this blog
In addition to Sennelier oil pastels, I used a gold marker for the symbols, and added dry gold pigment here and there. All the work was done spontaneously, intuitively. (Gold appears here and there in our lives, often unexpectedly.)
This painting is from the Inner Landscapes series.

Earlier as an artist-blacksmith, then as a mixed-media vessel sculptor and now as a heart painter, I’ve found inspiration from Angeles Arrien’s research on the five “universal shapes.” Recently I became curious about how other artists are using them. I came across both interesting artwork and useful art activities for personal growth.Read More
